“Mable changed my life,” says Val, a client who books independent support workers through the platform.

Val, who found Mable through a television ad, receives support for getting to and from appointments, cleaning, laundry, meal preparation and more. Ken, Val’s husband, also gets support for daily activities. Val self-manages her home care package through Homemade.

Why Mable

Previously, Val was getting support through organisations that sent employee support workers.

Val prefers the Mable model which means the support workers are independent and self-employed. “The ones through Mable get paid much better for what they do, and they can decide for themselves the services they want to provide. Also, if I need more hours, I can simply arrange it with them. The other service wasn’t nearly as flexible, and I really need that.”

Support through Mable

Val says, “The two ladies who come to us are absolutely amazing. They do so much for us, like cleaning, doing the laundry, cooking and even pulling weeds out of the garden. One of them makes the absolute best roast vegetables! They also drive us to appointments.”

Val also needs support while showering and getting ready for her day. Ken gets transportation support to a hospital, a 90-minute drive each way. “The support worker goes with him and reports it back to me in case Ken forgets some parts.”

Aside from the support she needs, Val is also able to do the things she loves, like puzzles and shopping. “My granddaughter’s wedding was coming up and my support worker took me shopping. I got a beautiful outfit that I wouldn’t otherwise have been able to get. I also got to go op-shopping, which was fun, a really good outing.”

More support hours from funding

Val says that the ease of using Mable is a huge advantage. “It’s just easy,” she says. “We can put up a session and get it approved and we can even add an extra hour if we need it. We don’t have to go through a provider and get permission and so on.”

She also says that she and Ken are getting more hours of support each week through Mable. “Since being with Mable, my support hours have doubled and Ken’s getting many more than before. It was really draining our packages because the fees were so high.

“But with Mable, the money is there, I can use it and not have humongous fees taken out. In fact, I’ve never gone over my Home Care Package hours with Mable.”

Val also uses funding for equipment such as her wheelchair. “My support worker took me to see an occupational therapist who was able to recommend the right one for me. Mable is so useful and I really feel like it’s lifted a huge weight off my shoulders.”

“I recommend Mable to everybody,” Val says. “I'm so much happier, not as stressed out, more at ease. Mable and my support workers have brought so much more light into my life.”

If you too want to find your kind of independence, just like Val, sign up to Mable and post a job ad to book a support worker and start building your team.

Preventing everyday harm in support work
As a support worker, you want your clients to feel safe, respected and supported. You may already think carefully about how to provide safe support and prevent serious incidents. But harm is not always obvious. Sometimes, small everyday actions, words or assumptions can affect a client in ways you may not have intended or noticed at the time. This is sometimes referred to as everyday harm. Over time, these small moments can build up and may affect how respected, heard, in control or safe your client feels. The newly launched Everyday Harm website brings together practical resources to help support workers and organisations build safer, more respectful support relationships. These resources were developed through Australian Research Council studies, including interviews with people with disability about their experiences. Mable was proud to be involved in this project as an Industry and Community Partner organisation. We hope these resources help you better understand everyday harm
