Disabled mums are the quiet supermums
As the water trickled over the rocks and my kids explored the bush, their laughter mingling with birdsong, I sat quietly on the wooden seat, taking it all in. The peace, the joy - but also something else. My eyes welled up just as my independent support worker glanced at me. She slipped an arm around me and gave a gentle squeeze. I didn't need to explain what I was feeling but she already knew. That feeling is something that I think every parent living with a disability needs to hear and embrace. A different kind of angst Mum - and dad - guilt is almost synonymous with parenting these days. We worry we're not doing enough, not being enough; that there's never enough time, money, or energy. But when you're parenting with disability, that feeling cuts deeper. It's the sting when you can't do something for, or with, your kids. Like driving them to a birthday party, kicking a soccer ball in the backyard. It's crying quietly in the kitchen when disability and parenthood all feels too much.

NDIS reforms announced: What we know so far
On 22 April 2026, Health Minister Mark Butler announced major reforms to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The changes have been described as a 'reset' with the intention to refocus the scheme, reduce spending and ensure long-term sustainability. While the reforms are wide-ranging, they will not take effect immediately and will be introduced gradually over time. The Government will introduce the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill next month, then there will be a lot of debate and community consultation before we see any changes take effect. Here's an explainer of the announcement and the key takeaways. Why the 'reset'? The NDIS was established to support people in Australia living with 'permanent and significant disability' 13 years ago. On 1 November 2025, the Australian Government officially launched the Support at Home program. It's the long-awaited refresh to the way in-home aged care is delivered. The new program is designed to improve access to services, equipment and home modifications that help older people stay safe, active and connected to their communities. Support at Home forms part of the new Aged Care Act , which gives older people more control over the care they receive. Services will be tailored to individual needs, preferences and goals, with greater opportunities for participants to make choices. What's new in Support at Home? The program introduces a range of changes to how aged care is delivered. Some key features include: Ongoing services with 8 funding classifications to better cater for a range of participant needs, with the highest now offering around $78,000 per year. Short-term services with 3 short-term classifications: Stronger preventative care, with the Restorative Care Pathway replacing
What we know so far about the Thriving Kids program
A note on language: At Mable, we use 'identity-first' language when referring to autism and autistic people. We've made this decision based on feedback from our community. We understand different people have different preferences, and we recognise and respect every individual's right to choose how their identity is described. On 20 August 2025, a new government program called 'Thriving Kids' was announced. It will support children with 'mild to moderate' developmental delays and autism. The announcement Disability and NDIS Minister Mark Butler made the announcement of the program, which will sit outside of the NDIS and is hoped to moderate the growth of the scheme. "Diverting this group of kids over time from the NDIS is an important element of making the scheme sustainable and returning it to its original intent," he said at the National Press Club . This glossary defines some of the most common terms, helping older people, their loved ones and support workers feel more confident navigating the program. Growing your business on Mable as an independent support worker starts with understanding how to make sure you're visible to the right clients at the right time. First things first, there are two ways you can find work on Mable: Apply for a job .  Be contacted directly about potential jobs. Who might contact you about jobs? On Mable, opportunities can come from a few different sources. You might hear from: Oli, Mable's AI assistant Oli helps clients find support workers based on their job post. If your experience and availability align with a job, you might receive a message from Oli asking if you're interested in being shortlisted. This means you can spend less time searching and more time considering opportunities that already align with your skills, preferences and availability. Being shortlisted doesn't mean you’re automatically assigned to a job. If the client contacts you, you still get to decide if you want to take on the work. Clients or their representative If y

For over ten years, we've been building a platform focused on giving you choice and control, and doing the right thing. We want to be fully open with you about a recent process we went through with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) about our Terms of Use. Our proactive engagement with the ACCC We've worked collaboratively with the ACCC and have updated our Terms of Use to ensure transparency and fairness. One of the clauses the ACCC had concerns about was a longstanding clause that potentially imposed a fee for taking services off the platform after people had met on there. However, Mable can confirm that no one was ever required to pay this fee. We took action to address these concerns as our commitment to fair and transparent practices is at the heart of our operations.
