Aged care competency training: what it is and how to complete it

New Support at Home competency training: everything you need to know

The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing has introduced new Strengthened Quality Standards that apply to anyone delivering aged care services. As part of these changes, all support workers who provide services to clients receiving aged care government funding must complete competency-based training.

This training is designed to make sure every support worker caring for aged care clients has a consistent, current understanding of best practice, covering everything from person-centred care to emergency response.

Mable is here to help you meet this requirement. We’re offering this training for free through the Mable Learning Hub, available to all independent support workers on the Mable platform.

What training do I need to complete?

You’ll need to complete 8 modules covering the following competency areas:

  • The delivery of person-centred, rights-based care
  • Cultural safety
  • Trauma-aware and healing-informed care
  • Caring for individuals living with dementia
  • Responding to medical emergencies (unless you currently hold a First Aid certificate)
  • The requirements of the Code of Conduct
  • The Serious Incident Response Scheme
  • Understanding the Code of Conduct and the Aged Care Quality Standards.

The training takes approximately 3 hours in total and is entirely self-paced; you can work through it in your own time.

How do I access the training?

Access the Aged Care Competency Training

  1. Head to the Mable Learning Hub and select Aged Care Competency Training
  2. If you don't have an account yet, you can create on to get started
  3. Complete all 8 modules and download the certificate for each one
  4. Email all 8 certificates to spqueries@mable.com.au

Once our team has reviewed your certificates, your Mable profile will be updated to show that you’ve completed the training.

What if I've already completed this training elsewhere?

If you’ve completed competency training through another provider, we may be able to accept your existing certificates. To be eligible, your training must:

  • Have been delivered by a registered training organisation (RTO) or another recognised provider
  • Cover the same competency areas listed above.

If that sounds like you, simply send your certificate to spqueries@mable.com.au. Our team will review it and, if it meets the requirements, update your profile accordingly.

When do I need to complete this by?

From 30 June 2026, support workers who haven’t completed the required competency training will no longer be able to apply for jobs with clients receiving aged care government funding.

We strongly recommend completing the training as early as possible to avoid any disruption to your work.

Will this training be visible on my Mable profile?

Yes. We’re currently building a profile badge to display completed training. Once this goes live, your profile will reflect your training status for clients to see.

Do I have to do this training if I only work with disability clients?

No. If you exclusively support clients with NDIS funding (not aged care government funding), you’re not required to complete this training at this stage. That said, if you plan to work with aged care clients in the future, completing the training now is a great way to get ahead.

I have a Cert III, Cert IV or a nursing qualification. Do I still need to complete the competency training?

Yes. Anyone delivering services to clients with aged care government funding is required to complete this training, regardless of any existing qualifications. This is a legislative requirement under the new Aged Care Act that applies to all support workers in the aged care sector, not just those without formal qualifications.
