Sharon’s story: How a break from the law led her to Mable

Here at Mable, we have thousands of independent support workers offering services to clients in innovative, creative and everyday ways. Sharon’s profile stood out following multiple glowing reviews from clients she engaged with on the Mable platform, who all praised her commitment and drive to go above and beyond. We wanted to know more, so we met up with her to find out what makes her tick.

A conveyancing solicitor by trade, Sharon discovered Mable while taking a career break to seek out a job in family and criminal law – an area she feels more passionate about. Looking for a way to earn some extra income, she was told of a friend’s daughters who were using the Mable platform to find work that could fit around university studies.

She toyed with the idea for a while, but after finally taking the plunge, hasn’t looked back – and even plans to continue providing social support on the weekends when she gets back to the law.

Living within the small community of Gordon Park, north of Brisbane, Sharon has found Mable to be a great way to find work in and around her town. Responding to jobs that were posted via the platform, she considers herself fortunate to have met clients all located within fifteen minutes from her home.

Not completely new to supporting others, Sharon cared for her grandmother and father during various illnesses. At the moment, she’s working with four clients via Mable, supporting with a range of tasks from cooking to housework, even paperwork to help her clients keep on top of their ‘life admin’.

Mostly taking her clients’ lead when deciding what to do, a session can also regularly include a walk on the beach, coffee or lunch out. Most importantly, Sharon believes in providing companionship to those who may be isolated and often these appointments can feel like friends catching up. In this way, Sharon feels like she gets much more out of the arrangement than simply a flexible way to earn some extra money.

“The connections that I have made have been wonderful. Through the platform I have been able to meet people that I never thought was possible. It has opened my eyes to other aspects and people in my community.”

It’s apparent her clients feel the same – here’s just a snapshot of what they have to say about her;

“Sharon is amazing! She goes above and beyond her role to support me. She is genuinely kind, caring and funny. She wanted to make my birthday special, she bought me an amazing and delicious cake with a candle and even offered to take me out to lunch! Wow!. She is extremely protective, supportive, intelligent and kind….a rare gem!” – Anonymous

“I was feeling very uncertain and concerned about having a support worker. I am ditching that term and consider you a house buddy. I enjoy your bright breezy personality and thank you for being so accommodating with what needs to be done.” – Pat
