At Mable, our purpose is simple: to empower our community to shape the life they want. Recently, we had the pleasure of speaking with Luke, a Mable client based in Queensland, who shared how he has built a support team around him that has given him the tools to thrive in his day to day life.

His story is a great example of how the right support team can transform lives.

Finding the right support team

Luke's journey with Mable began in July when he was searching for reliable and compassionate support workers. Like many people who use NDIS services, Luke wanted more than just help with daily tasks – he needed a team that truly understood him and could offer personalised care. That's where Nathan and Rhyley came in.

Luke quickly realised he'd found exactly what he was looking for. His weekly sessions with Nathan and Rhyley focus on social and emotional support, which, as Luke describes, have been 'life-changing'. He highlights how their calm, caring demeanour and consistent presence have made a significant impact on his well-being.

Luke emphasised how Nathan and Rhley have gone above and beyond to ensure he feels cared for, listened to and supported.

"The consistent and caring support I receive from them has made a significant difference in my life," Luke said.

For Luke, having support workers who are "calm, caring and not stressed" has been crucial in fostering an environment where he can feel at ease and thrive. Their ability to make him feel assured, and their willingness to engage in meaningful conversations, has helped alleviate his anxiety and create a sense of stability in his life.

Building independence

One of the most empowering aspects of Luke's experience is how his support team has helped him regain independence. Whether it's attending appointments, connecting with peers, exploring new places like Sea Life in Mooloolaba, or taking trips to the Gold Coast, Luke's independent support workers have become an essential part of his routine. The freedom to schedule multiple support workers with varied availability ensures that Luke always has the help he needs.

"The support team helps you get out in the community and do what you want… when someone's sick, you've got someone else to rely on," Luke shared.

This flexibility has given him a sense of control over his life, allowing him to pursue activities and goals that matter to him without feeling restricted.

Luke's advice for building your support team

Luke offers valuable advice for anyone looking to build their own support team on Mable. His top tip? Be confident in what you're looking for.

"You need to choose the right one for you," he explains, stressing the importance of not just picking the first person who is available. Luke advises meeting a few different support workers before making a decision, ensuring you find someone whose personality and approach align with your needs.

The Mable platform makes this process easy by offering detailed profiles, availability, and reviews, giving clients like Luke the transparency they need to make informed decisions.

As Luke mentioned in his interview, Mable is "easy to use and easy to navigate."

The impact of choice and compassion

Mable empowers clients and support workers by offering choice and control over the support they receive. Luke's story is a testament to how Mable makes building a support team easy and stress-free. With clear systems in place for posting, scheduling and finding support, Mable allows clients to take control of their care in a way that suits their individual needs.

"There are no surprises," Luke said, reflecting on how Mable's platform is designed to find the perfect match for his needs.

The ability to communicate openly and see exactly what to expect from potential support workers has made a world of difference for Luke.

Luke's story is a shining example of how the right support team can change lives. By offering independence, flexibility, and compassionate care, Luke has been able to take control of his support and live the life he wants.

Preventing everyday harm in support work
As a support worker, you want your clients to feel safe, respected and supported. You may already think carefully about how to provide safe support and prevent serious incidents. But harm is not always obvious. Sometimes, small everyday actions, words or assumptions can affect a client in ways you may not have intended or noticed at the time. This is sometimes referred to as everyday harm. Over time, these small moments can build up and may affect how respected, heard, in control or safe your client feels. The newly launched Everyday Harm website brings together practical resources to help support workers and organisations build safer, more respectful support relationships. These resources were developed through Australian Research Council studies, including interviews with people with disability about their experiences. Mable was proud to be involved in this project as an Industry and Community Partner organisation. We hope these resources help you better understand everyday harm
