The secret to a good life? (It’s not what you think)

The Mable platform is all about building long term connections. Empowering consumers and support workers to choose each other, so you can form a relationship based on similar interests and values. Many people who join the Mable community tell us that they do so because they want to be connected.

As we celebrate the International Day of Happiness on 20 March 2018, it’s worth thinking about the secret to a good life. The world’s longest study on happiness has lasted more than 75 years, surveying hundreds of people and their descendants, and it’s had some surprising results. Contrary to what the original 268 Harvard sophomores predicted when they signed up in 1939, money and fame wouldn’t turn out to be the secret to a happy and healthy life.

Good relationships are what make us happier and healthier

The researchers found that people who had healthy relationships and were more connected to their family, friends and community, were most likely to be physically and mentally healthy as they aged.

Conversely, loneliness is becoming a real problem for societies around the world. Britain has its first Minister for Loneliness and in Australia, three in five people surveyed by Lifeline often feel lonely.

People who are lonely are less happy, their health and brain function decline sooner, and they have a shorter life expectancy.

When it comes to connections it’s not quantity, it’s quality. And relationships don’t have to be smooth either. Knowing that you have someone you can really count on makes you more resilient and able to weather life’s challenges, from disappointment to physical pain.

“Happiness is love. Full stop.” – George Vaillant

Getting connected again

Relationships take work but here are some ways to get connected and feel the benefits sooner rather than later.

  • On Neighbour Day, 25 March 2018, think of ways to connect with someone in your neighbourhood. Maybe it’s someone you always pass on the street and vow to invite round for a cup of tea. If you know a family or two, why not suggest a picnic in the park?
  • Reconnect with someone you’ve lost contact with, especially if you had an argument. To quote Mark Twain, “There isn’t time, so brief is life, for bickering, apologies, heartburning, callings to account. There is only time for loving, and but an instant, so to speak, for that.”

If you’re a carer, the Mable platform is there for you to find some support for your loved one so you can take some time out to connect with your partner or other significant people in your life.

If you feel you’d like to get out and about, look up an old friend or simply go for a coffee, why not Post a Job and see what happens?
