Empowering choice and control through information

Knowledge is power. Knowledge shared is power multiplied ~ Robert Noyce

More than 25 million people call Australia home. Of those, more than 518,000 access the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) while more than a million receive support from aged care services in Australia, with over 208,000 of whom have accessed the Home Care Packages (HCP) Program.

Over the years, there has been a clarion call for overhauling both the NDIS and the aged care system, and while there continue to be incremental improvements in both, the reality is that they can often be challenging systems to navigate. This is particularly the case while looking for information or clarification around eligibility for funding, assessment processes, etc.

At Mable, we’re all about people — we listen and try to understand their perspectives. Through extensively conducted research, we discovered that one of the key ways we could support members of the community was through information.

Information that’s credible, accurate, accessible, easily understood, well-researched and holistic. Information they could access in one place, at any point in their support journey, whether it’s to understand how ACAT assessments are conducted, how to access early intervention support through the NDIS, or anything else.

Members of our community shared with us a range of perspectives about why they would benefit from these resources. While one mentioned that “people with specific conditions (such as autism or dementia) would find information on these topics helpful”, another emphasised the importance of “breaking information down into easily digestible guides, particularly for older people”.

We took this feedback into consideration and launched our Topic Libraries, a dynamic hub of resources aimed at empowering both our community, as well as those who might be at the very start of their support journey. From NDIS Home and Living Options and Autism to Down syndrome and Dementia, we are working hard behind the scenes to create valuable, informative hubs to help you along on your journey.

Australia’s aged care and disability support workforce is an integral part of achieving health equity for all. At Mable, we are committed to supporting those who have chosen to become a support worker as well as those who have a passion for supporting our communities but need some guidance on their professional journeys. Our Topic Library, Becoming a Support Worker, is one such example. In the near future, we will continue to develop resources to support this workforce.

“Mable’s vision is an inclusive society where everyone belongs,” says Alex Boardman, Head of Content & Engagement at Mable. “We can’t talk about an inclusive society without helping to ensure everyone has opportunities to succeed and live well, and the knowledge that will help them get to those opportunities.”

“Through our Topic Libraries, we want people with disability and older Australians seeking support to have access to resources they can use as they progress through their support journey in life. This could be a student looking for autism support as they transition from school to uni, or someone who’s parent is getting older and might need some support at home. It’s what they have asked of us, and it’s what we strive to work towards.”

He adds, “Our topic libraries are designed to be ‘evergreen’ resources for valuable and relevant information on everything related to aged care and disability.”

Behind the scenes

Technically, creating a topic library is about creating content. But that’s a rather simplistic way of looking at it. It’s about creating quality content that has value for our community.

“It’s about addressing the pain points of readers, anticipating their questions, and distilling a subject as intimidating and complex as the NDIS into easy-to-understand, credible information that has — above everything else — value for readers,” says Neha Malude, Editorial Marketing Manager at Mable.

Where to from here?

We will continue to build upon our current topic libraries, constantly aligning with the needs and wants of our community. For now, you are welcome to browse our Mable Topic Libraries.
