A disability support worker has the potential to be many things: inspiring, educational, empowering and a companion to clients. If you’re ready to provide empowering support, this online resource can help you learn how to provide person-centred support through risk enablement in everyday situations.

Enabling Risk: Putting Positives First is a 5-module online learning resource created specifically for disability support workers by La Trobe University and the NSW Government.

The online resource works through lessons and topics that enable disability support workers to learn how to help clients become actively involved in their communities. Using a risk enablement approach to create person-centred support, the five modules act to offer clients independence and make them feel empowered during their support journey.

Here at Mable, we’re passionate about providing as much control and choice to clients as possible, which means giving clients the opportunity to schedule their support and receive the support that empowers them and their lifestyle. The Enabling Risk resource similarly works to offer empowerment by offering the tools to help people living with a disability follow an engaged lifestyle.

What is risk enablement?
According to the online resource created by La Trobe University, risk enablement is a practice that can be used when assisting a person living with a cognitive disability. Risk enablement can be practiced to create person-centred support and includes putting positives first, being proactive, minimising harm and matching clients’ support preferences.

Each module in Enabling Risk features a series of lessons, including:

  • defining risk enablement and the factors of risk-taking behaviour,
  • learning about the Four Essentials of Risk Enablement,
  • studying the Risk Enablement Process,
  • discovering how to apply the process of risk enablement to different case scenarios,
  • and learning the benefits of enabling choices that involve risk.
