Could your passions and hidden talents lead to a career in support work?

The NDIS is a major national reform, designed to give people with a disability more choice over the support they engage. It’s also a great opportunity for people who are new to support work to use their diverse skills and backgrounds to find rewarding, flexible work in the industry. We take a look at why.

Thousands of NDIS participants use Mable to directly engage independent support workers in their local community. But they’re not just looking for experienced support workers. They’re also using the platform to find people who are new to support work, who can offer diverse perspectives and talents to support them to achieve their goals.

New to support work? This is how the NDIS can work for you.

Mable allows clients to use their NDIS funding to build a team of people to support them. With greater consumer choice delivered via the NDIS, participants are not necessarily only looking for traditional support workers but people with a skillset that suits their aspirations, as outlined in their NDIS plan.
For those who are not familiar with the NDIS, there are two categories under which participants can receive support, ‘Core Supports’ and ‘Capacity Building’. There’s also a third category via which participants can receive funding; capital expenditure on items such as assistive technologies or mobility devices.
According to the NDIS, Core Support funding is designed to help clients with everyday activities, their current disability-related needs and support to work towards your goals. Capacity Building supports are a little different; they help participants build independence and skills to help reach their long-term goals.

Here’s where your hidden talents come in handy

The majority of support that NDIS participants are seeking will relate to their Core Supports, which can include anything from personal care with day to day living to assistance with social and community participation. Within Capacity Building are a number of support categories including finding and keeping a job, improved health and wellbeing, improved learning, daily living and living arrangements.

We often hear of frustrated NDIS participants who have been sent support workers from traditional providers and agencies who don’t have the skills to support them with their goals. For example, someone who has no interest in cooking being sent for a shift that’s supposed to be about helping them build their capacity to prepare healthy meals. Or a support worker who’s new to the area being provided to support someone to develop confidence in using public transport.

With Mable, clients have the ability to search for support workers based on a detailed profile of their skills, experience and interests. Independent workers on the platform have an opportunity to paint a picture of themselves and their personality so clients can ensure they’re right for the specific job. It’s for this reason that we say to independent support workers that your personal brand often matters more than your resume. Plus, you don’t need specific qualifications to provide clients with social and domestic support.

Even if you’re part-way through a course in coding and looking for some flexible, rewarding work while you study – there might be someone out there looking for someone just like you to help them to build computer skills. To see what providing support via Mable could look like, here’s a collection of our recent requests of the week.

Whether you’re looking for flexible and rewarding work in your community or your next career move, Mable makes it easy for you to connect with clients you click with. Sign up and start creating your free profile today.
