Musician. Counselling student. Customer Engagement Specialist at Mable. Meet Dave. We may be an online platform, but behind every phone call and click of the mouse is a team of wonderful humans based in an office in Sydney. Meet Dave. He’s on the phone all day, every day, making sure clients and workers connect with each other.
When I saw the Mable role advertised, I couldn’t believe my luck. I’m loving my job here. I love speaking with clients, their family members and support coordinators. My role is about supporting the consumers as best I can during the sign-up process, and making sure consumers and support workers connect with each other.
Every worker and client is different, so no two days are the same. On any one day, I could be doing welcome calls to new clients, setting up a profile for a family member and finding out if the client needs support or has any questions about the platform. We also monitor activity so that if, for example, a worker hasn’t responded within 24 hours, we can prompt them. The same goes for agreements, which have to be in place for insurance and so the worker can get paid.
But my story starts with a degree in electronic arts at University of Western Sydney. I knew I wanted to get into the aged care and mental health sectors, counselling and soundtrack design. Looking back, I’ve always known I would find my niche, and I’ve managed to pull all my passions together!
I’ve always worked in contact centres and music stores. Straight out of uni, it was a way to support my work as a solo artist and in bands, as well as my studies in counselling. I then worked at APRA/AMCOS as a copyright researcher, helping artists to get paid their royalties. In my spare time I love to do music research, for example, who covered which song, who wrote what song, and when? So, I have a head full of music trivia and this came in handy.
I went on to work at Catholic Community Care, connecting clients to available support in their communities, and I came across Mable. I had a real respect for the work Mable was doing.
Before joining Mable, I worked at the Arts Health Institute (AHI), where I ran a program that aimed to enrich the lives of and create meaningful connections for elders. I found my previous experience as a counselling student was useful in supporting clients, and their families. I then led the Music & Memory program for AHI, rolling it out to over 100 aged and health care sites across Australia.
Simply put, the program is about personalised playlists for individuals as a way to tap into memory and reconnect with their identity, and I provided support to care professionals in implementing the program.
The program was developed in the US for people with dementia. In Australia, it’s had positive impacts not only on people with dementia, but also in reducing pain and agitation, and working with other chronic and cognitive impairments.
Now that I’m at Mable, I hope to finally finish my Graduate Diploma in Counselling. I’m recording an album with band Colliding Scopes (we’ve been working on it for 10 years) and collaborating with friends on electronic and alternative country projects. I also like to read.
