Over the next eighteen months 10,000 new home care packages will soon become available, as part of a $662 million investment by government into the aged care sector. This funding will alleviate the pressure of the national prioritisation queue while the government considers long term funding options.

“These places give older Australians a choice about how and where they want to live their lives” Prime Minister Scott Morrison stated in his announcement

This additional funding will allow more ageing Australians to have access to in-home care through a home care package, with allocations across all levels of packages being increased.

“Older Australians deserve the best care and support and our Government is offering choice, this funding will ensure Australians have the support they need to live in their homes longer. This means more choices for a longer life, giving older Australians more aged care options and the capacity to live independently for as long as possible.” says Minister for Senior Australians and Aged Care Ken Wyatt.

Out of the $662 million, over a third of this ($282.4 million) will be invested into home care packages. This funding boost will increase the wellbeing of senior Australians, to live independently for longer and receive support that is safe and high-quality. In the past year, the government has announced 40,000 new home care packages and $115 million to grow the Commonwealth Home Support Program. These programs allow the elderly to receive care in their own home and is flexible to support their individual lifestyles.
