What is a home care nurse?

Home care nurses are private nurses who provide care for people in their own homes. They can visit people in any living situation. For example, they see people in independent housing, retirement communities and aged care facilities.

How does a home care nurse differ from a support worker?

The level of care they provide is different. Registered nurses can assess patient needs and complete more complex healthcare tasks, such as wound care, continence education and dispensing medications. Support workers support people who need assistance with tasks in their home or community, rather than assistance with health or medical issues.

Who do private nurses provide in-home support for?

Private nurses support people with all kinds of health needs. For example, if you require ongoing care for conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes, a home nurse can help with treatment. Nurses can also provide short-term care to help people after surgery, illness or injury. They are also hired by people who require palliative care for loved ones.
