In fact, many people find that they feel better specifically because they are at home, in familiar surroundings and where family and friends can visit freely.

Having your own private nurse doesn’t cost the earth either. Mable’s home nurse services are surprisingly affordable and when you consider that your Aged Care Package or NDIS funding can contribute to the cost, you’ll see the positives adding up.

How does getting a home nurse work?

It’s as simple as browsing the profiles of enrolled and registered nurses on the Mable platform, selecting someone who suits your needs and meeting them to see if you click. You discuss and agree on availability, hourly rates and the services they will provide and there you have it … you have your very own private nurse!

What services do private nurses provide?

Typically, you would hire a private nurse for non-critical care that doesn’t need to be performed in a hospital setting. That could be short-term follow-up treatment after being discharged from hospital or it could be long-term care if you need help with medications, diabetes, asthma or emphysema management, wound management and chronic conditions.

On the Mable platform, you can find registered nurses who specialise in aged care such as support for dementia and Parkinson’s disease. Clients who live with a disability can receive support from a home care nurse who is experienced in working with clients who have cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, hearing or visual impairments and intellectual disabilities.

Should I use a nursing agency?

Nursing agencies have been around for a long time but a new home nursing model means you can choose the nurse who supports you and also choose when they come and agree on the hourly rate. With Mable, you browse the home nurse profiles and make a shortlist of the people who you feel you would click with. Then you reach out to them via the Mable platform, arrange to have a video chat or a face-to-face meeting with two or three and you decide who you choose. This means you can have the same home nurse come to you every time, instead of wondering who might turn up next.

With private nurses that you find on Mable, there is greater flexibility. Because they are independent, self-employed support workers (with nursing qualifications), they can arrange their availability around your needs.

Mable was actually established to address these very needs. Mable’s founder and CEO, Peter Scutt experienced difficulties with home care support providers for his parents. They were uncomfortable with the stream of unfamiliar support people coming to care for them and he knew there had to be a better way.

How to find the right home nurse

At Mable, we know that every client is an individual. You have a unique personality and unique needs and we like to provide a personalised experience. As a Mable client, you get to choose the home nurse who visits you. You can even choose more than one and have a happy, caring team that’s just for you.

Simply search the support worker profiles on the Mable platform and filter your searches specifically to find nurses. A list of support workers in your local area who offer nursing services will appear and then you can read through the profiles to learn more about each one.

You may prefer a male or female nurse, someone who is young and bubbly or someone who is of a more mature age and has decades of experience. You may require a home nurse who specialises in your condition. When you look at a profile, a list of services offered will be visible which will give you a great idea around suitability for your needs.

With Mable, you get to choose who provides you with home nursing services. The profiles will give you a good idea of the nurse’s personality, interests, cultural background, even languages that they speak.

How much do home nurses cost?

Every support worker on Mable lists their indicative hourly rates right there on their profile, categorised by weekday, weekend and 24-hour shift. When discussing your needs with a potential private nurse that you find on Mable, you will also discuss hourly rates and together, agree on what a session will cost.

Hourly rates are set by the support worker and vary according to their length of experience, the kinds of services they offer and so on. You can expect rates to be around $50 per hour and could be $70 or more per hour, depending on a range of variants.

A low 5% Mable fee is added to what the home nurse is paid. You benefit from full transparency with Mable. You will always know what you will have to pay, before you even make a booking.

Hiring a private nurse through Mable can be a lot cheaper than through a nursing agency, and again, you get to choose your nurse.

What support is provided by NDIS for private nurses?

The role of the NDIS is to help you maintain your independence and do things for yourself. The NDIS provides funding for ‘capacity-building’ nursing support which includes assessment and training. That means if you need to be assessed by a qualified nurse to determine the services and level of support you require, funding will be provided. If you need a nurse to train you to manage things like medication or wound care, the NDIS will also fund this.

Funding can only be provided for nursing services that are related to your disability and that are not funded by another health care program or state health care.

Q: Are home nurses found on Mable fully qualified?

A: Absolutely! Profiles outline the nurses’ qualifications, experience and registration. Before a support worker – in this case, nurses – can be accepted to offer their services via the Mable platform, their qualifications are checked and verified. When meeting your potential new home nurse, you can ask to see their qualifications yourself.

Q: Is it safe to have a nurse come to my home?

A: If you’re concerned about your safety and security, Mable goes to great lengths to ensure your peace of mind. All support workers on Mable, including nurses of course, are security checked and police checked.

Q: If I book a private nurse through Mable, will they have their own insurance?

A: All support workers on the Mable platform, including nurses, are covered by a comprehensive suite of insurances.

Q: If I hire a private nurse through Mable, does that mean I won’t have to go to the doctor?

A: Your doctor is a critical component of your medical wellbeing. Your home nurse, just like any nurse in a healthcare setting adheres to instructions and recommendations provided by doctors. If your nurse identifies that you are experiencing symptoms that need to be checked by a doctor, it will be for your best health and welfare to see your doctor.

Q: What if I start working with a home nurse from Mable and then decide I want to choose someone else?

A: With Mable, you are always in control. You can always add someone new to your support team, any time you like and if you prefer not to invite one of your support people back again, there is absolutely no problem with that.
