Community Grants Guidelines 2020

Grants Available 

The Mable Community Grants selective grant application process opens once a year, September 10th for 2020, for interested individuals or groups to submit their application. 

From a total pool of up to $20,000 p.a. grants are available, ranging from $2,000 to $10,000 and must relate to promoting independence or inclusivity in one of the following areas:

  • The Arts
  • Sport and recreation
  • Business and Technology

Grants valued at more than $5000 may receive funding via staggered payments, based upon prior milestones being attained. When this occurs a timeline will be agreed to with the grant recipient, prior to finalisation of the grant agreement. 

Grant Period

  • Any successful recipient of a Mable Community Grant has one year in which to spend the funding from the receipt of the first payment or lump sum.  
  • The project that the grant is funding , must be launched within 18 months from the receipt of the first payment or lump sum. 

Who Is Eligible To Make an Application for Grant Funding:

  •  Individuals and groups are eligible to participate
  • The individual, or group submitting the application must Australian residents living within Australia
  • Applicants who have previously received funding via Mable Community Grants may apply. However, when assessing your application, we will consider any previous Mable funded-activities and minimise the risk of duplication in funding for similar activities when making a decision. 
  • You don’t need to use the Mable platform as a client or care worker to apply, the grant application process is open to the broader Australian community. 

Who Is Not Eligible to Make an Application

  • Registered charities
  • Individuals or organisations outside Australia
  • Employees of Mable Technologies Pty Limited (and related Mable entities)

What The Grant Money Can Be Used For

  • The grant funding must be used for the purpose of activities and outcomes that promote independence and inclusion for Australians living with disability and / or who are ageing within at least one of the following areas:
    • The Arts
    • Sport and recreation
    • Business and Technology
  • Larger projects may aggregate these funds with other funding or use the funding to complete a particular stage of a project. The specific details of what the funding will go towards must be outlined within the application. 
  • If some of the elements within a funding proposal do not meet the particular grant round purpose or otherwise at our discretion, we may consider funding part of an application.

Examples of Eligible Grant Requests

  • Research and testing of new technology designed to make it easier for our ageing population to live independently at home for longer
  • Using towards production costs for a film written, directed or starring people with a disability or older people or with a subject matter supporting inclusion and independence that is to be submitted to an international film festival
  • Purchasing equipment or travel expenses for an individual or sporting team travelling to a domestic or international tournament
  • Funding of a new business venture or research projects that promote inclusion

What the grant money Can’t be used for:

  • Nothing illegal or that may cause or do harm
  • Retrospective funding – Only items/services purchased after the approval date will be eligible to be funded as part of the grant  
  • Purchase of land or real property
  • Major capital expenditure or contributions to capital development including construction activities that are the role of peak bodies, such as policy advice, systemic advocacy or research. 
  • Items that are eligible for funding via government programmes including and not limited to Medicare, NDIS, HCPs etc
  • Funding in support of individuals, ‘reasonable and necessary’ supports and activities eligible for funding in a participant’s National Disability Insurance Scheme plan
  • Activities for which other Commonwealth, State, Territory or Local Government Bodies have primary responsibility for ensuring access and inclusion of people with disability or the aging population including, but not limited to: activities that relate to the management of chronic health conditions, employment activities that are the responsibility of the Disability Employment Services ‘Employment Assistance Fund  education activities that are the responsibility of the National Disability Coordination Officer Program or for the cost of teachers or childcare workers to undertake disability inclusion training
  • Government fees, charges or taxes

Application Process / How to Apply

  • Mable Community Grants applications open once per year (September 10th – November 30th , 2020) and can be made by an individual, group or business. 
  • Applicants must complete the relevant application form in full and be able to provide relevant evidence and consideration of how any funding received will be allocated and used to meet the stated goals. If the correct information is not provided and the applicant does not address all criteria requested, they risk the possibility of their application being delayed or in some cases, not being considered
  • Before applying, you must read and understand these guidelines which form a part of our terms and conditions. Successful applicants will be required to enter into a grant agreement

  • Any changes to grant documentation will be published on the Mable Community Grants Website
  •  A separate application form must be submitted for each individual project or activity
  • If more than one application is submitted for the same project or activity the latest application received will progress. 
  • To apply you must:

    • All sections of the application form must be completed 
    • All eligibility criteria and assessment criteria must be addressed within the application  
    • All necessary attachments must be submitted with your application
    • Submit your application/s to Mable Community Grants by 11:59 PM AEST on or before 30 November 2020.  

Entries that are not genuine or are incomplete, late or in any way fraudulent or deemed to be inappropriate or unacceptable for any reason by Mable Community Grants Selection Committee will be declared void in Mable’s sole discretion. 

Selection process 

The Mable Community Grants Selection Committee is made up of two nominated Mable employees or board members and two or three external individuals, from the disability and ageing community.  The Committee is responsible for the final review and decision-making process relating to the disbursement of grants from the Mable Community Grants Application process. 

Assessment criteria

All applications will be assessed on their relative merit in promoting independence and inclusivity for people with disability or people who are ageing.  The application must clearly outline: 

  • The anticipated impact of your initiative or project on the community
  • The scale and significance of the project
  • The funds required and their use
  • What actions will be taken and how will the applicants ensure the project will be completed in the required timeframe, no later than 18 months from the receipt of funding. 

Applicants may be contacted for further information throughout the judging process. Any information supplied will form a part of their application.  

Mable may at its discretion require certain probity checks to be conducted.

The Judging Committee’s decision is final. The Judging Committee reserves the right to not fund any applications if they do not believe any applications have sufficient merit.

Disbursement of Grant Funding

  • Mable Community Grants does not have DGR1 Charity Status and partners with various charities to disperse the monies to any grant application recipient.  Grant recipients will need to complete an agreement with the selected charity, accepting the charity’s terms and conditions for disbursement and governance. 
  • Mable Community Grants reserves the right to put additional conditions or restrictions on any funding disbursed.

  • All grant recipients are required to provide regular updates regarding their use of funds and progress on their project, either via the charity disbursing the funds or directly to Mable Community Grants.

Media, Promotion and Usage Rights 

  1. All grant recipients agree to acknowledge Mable Community Grants as a funder of the project or initiative and acknowledge the grant origin where appropriate eg. Social Media, product launches, credits etc. 
  2. Any personal information collected in the administration of a competition will be handled in accordance with the Mable Privacy Policy which is available on its website. 
  3. The applicant agrees that Mable Community Grants has the right to reproduce names, photographs, material, comments and feedback provided by entrants in promotional material including but not limited to website, brochures and other online channels. 
  4. All applications must be original and created solely by the applicant/s. All applications and all copyright and other rights in the applications and supporting materials become the property of Mable Community Grants and will not be returned. Each entrant agrees to provide a written assignment of all rights to Mable Community Grants if requested. By submitting an application and any other materials (save for any personal information) to Mable Community Grants in connection with their grants round, each entrant:
    1. specifically authorises Mable Community Grants to use and/or license third parties to use such entry in whole or in part, in perpetuity in or on any and all media, whether currently in existence or developed in the future, and alone or together or as part of other information, content and/or material of any kind or nature; 
    2. represents and warrants that all elements contained in the entry or other material: 
      1. are original to the entrant and fully cleared for use as contemplated in these Terms and Conditions; 
      2. do not and will not, in any way, violate or breach any of the terms of any other agreement the entrant may be a party to;
      3. do not contain defamatory, misleading, deceptive or otherwise unlawful, untrue or inaccurate information, infringe or violate any copyright or other intellectual property right; or contain any matter the publication or sale of which will violate any law; 
      4. are not obscene or likely to cause offence; 
      5. are not in any way cruel or abusive; and 
      6. will not require Mable Community Grants to pay or incur any sums to any person or entity as a result of Mable Community Grants use or exploitation of the same,
    3. unconditionally and irrevocably consents to any act or omission which would otherwise infringe any of their moral rights in the application and waives all moral rights in the entry that arise outside Australia;
    4. warrants that where the submission contains the image, likeness or any identifying characteristic of another person, the entrant has received express consent from those other people to be included in the submission. The entrant indemnifies Mable Community Grants of any breach losses or fines incurred by Mable as a breach of this warranty. 
  • Except for any liability that cannot by law be excluded, Mable Community Grants, its related bodies corporate and associated agencies (and any of their personnel) exclude all liability for any loss (including any damage, claim, injury, cost or expense) which is suffered or incurred by any Grant application or Grant recipient, including, without limitation:  
    1. any indirect, economic or consequential loss;
    2. any loss arising from the negligence of Mable Community Grants, its related corporations and associated agencies (and any of their personnel); and
    3. any liability for personal injury or death.
  • No responsibility will be taken by Mable Community Grants or its authorised agents for applications ineligible due to technical reasons or any other reason. 
  • All Grant recipients agree to the recording of their project and reasonable future interactions with Mable Community Grants to record their story, success of their project and impact of the Grant. 


  • These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of New South Wales, Australia. 
  • Mable Community Grants may amend these Terms and Conditions at its absolute discretion.
  • In the event of any dispute regarding the administration, rules, results and all other matters relating to the Mable Community Grants application, judging or disbursement process, the decision of Mable Community Grants shall be final and no correspondence or discussion shall be entered into. 

Key Timings for the grant process 2020

10th September 2020 – Mable Community Grants Launch

10th September  2020  – Mable Community Grants Applications Open

30th November 2020 – Mable Community Grants Applications Close

November – December 2020  – All applications are considered by the Mable Community Grants Selection Committee

November – December 2020 – Charities are identified to match with successful applicants.  

February 2021 – Winners are announced (updated)

February 2021- Outcome notices are emailed to applicants

February 2021 – First stage or lump sum (less than $5000) payment is made to successful applicants

As required  – Additional payments are made throughout the year for grants in excess of $5,000

February 2022 – Grant recipient completes a report outlining the status of their project upon the 12 month mark, indicating whether a success or not, the financial standing of the project and if there were any other events which impacted the outcome. 

June 2022 – All projects, or project stages funded, must be completed
