Autism 101: Knowledge and tools to better support people with Autism

We know how important it is for people with autism to feel seen, heard and understood. We also know that Support workers who have a holistic, person-centred understanding of autism can be better prepared to create a supportive environment that fosters learning and growth.

We’re excited to announce that we have entered into a partnership with Autism Explained who offer a comprehensive ‘Autism 101’ training course. Independent support workers on the Mable platform now have free access to the course via the Mable Learning Hub.
The 9 Module course (valued at over $189) covers what autism is, how autistic people process information and understand the world, along with practical, proven strategies to assist them in supporting clients with autism.
The training was written by Shannan Lea and Paul Micallef.

Shannan’s son was diagnosed with autism just prior to his third birthday. She is completing her master’s degree in Autism Studies at Griffith University and celebrates the diversity, skills and talents of children on the autism spectrum.

Paul is a former aerospace engineer who discovered he was on the autism spectrum several years ago. Since then, he has worked with countless autistic adults and children, and teaches parents, teachers and students about autism.
Encourage your support team to complete the training

Since launching the training last week, we have seen over 150 Independent support workers access the Autism 101 course. Workers who have completed the training have indicated a strong increase in understanding of autism, including managing anxiety and understanding behaviour as a communication.
If you would like your Independent support workers to complete the Autism 101 training, you can send them to the following page with further information.

This new course takes the number of training courses on the Mable Learning hub to over 100, in line with our commitment to drive quality support and outcomes. We continue to add new modules every month, so if there’s a particular subject area you feel would be beneficial for your independent support worker to understand, please let us know here.
